The bad news is that there are literally millions of blogs out there, all fighting for the same eyeballs you want to reach. The good news is that most of them aren't optimized for search engines properly. This means that if you take simple steps to optimize your site for search engines like Google, Yahoo!, and Bing, you will have a much better chance of getting traffic than most. Here are some quick tips to follow:
.) If you're using a blogging framework like Wordpress, Joomla!, or Drupal, don't forget to put a meta description of the site in the main index page of the website. If you skip this step, when people come across you on Google, all they will see is a line of meaningless keywords skimmed from the last article that Google saw. It will say the name of the site and "Tagged with . . ." That looks ridiculous. In most content-management systems, the code for the main site is in a folder called "Themes" or "Templates." Find that, open index.php, and add the following code to the head section: meta name=“description” content=”what my website is about here." This step is one that few bloggers take to heart, and your blog will be optimized for search engines way more than theirs almost by default.
.) Do put meta tags on your articles. It might seem a bit ugly, but nothing is better for pushing you higher in search engine rankings.
.) Give your images meaningful names that are keyword rich. For example, instead of calling that funny mugshot of the President “obama1,” call it “obama_and_precious_teleprompter_TOTUS”.jpg or something equally inflammatory. Then change the file permissions on your uploads folder to 777 so that people can follow your pictures from places like Google Images and make the jump to your site. If not, they'll get the "Access Denied" message, and no one wants that slap in the face.
.) Give vivid names to all your articles. This pushes your article above the clutter of the Internet.
.) Have your pages export to static HTML pages with long URLS. That way people will see “yourblogname.com/a_funny_article_name_here” instead of “yourblogname”/a=?45655.php.” In Wordpress and most other content management system, you can download and install a free plugin to make this possible. Static HTML pages are important for another reason: If someday you make it to the front of Digg, your website – and more importantly, your MySQL database – won’t be under so much stress. That will guarantee you stay up and enjoy the traffic, not crash because of it.
.) Add a sitemap to your site. These are .xml files that help Google know what all the pages on your site are for. These are also free plugins for most major blogs. A good one will update automatically and ping the major search engines every time you change something. The more often Google knows you have fresh content, the more often they will index you.
.) Don’t forget to be a good citizen and visit other blogs. Leave comments on their sites with links to yours. Comment on your site about theirs and provide a link to it. Most blog owners constantly check where their traffic is coming in, and they love incoming links. They are very apt to scratch your back if you scratch theirs.
.) Use an SEO services company. Have them check out your site and see if you are doing everything you can to earn free traffic from search engines. You may be amazed to see how fast they can push you up!For more information please visit my Seo Company Services or search engine optimization store
